Place Lalla Yeddouna, Fez, Morocco
mossessian & partners has won an international competition to regenerate Place Lalla Yeddouna, a strategic location at the heart of Fez's ancient Medina. The aim is to revitalize the site (7,400sqm) and its surroundings, creating modern distinctive architecture for an area that is full of tradition, vibrancy and functional diversity. Physically the site comprises a mosaic of small-scale, modest, sand-coloured houses and a labyrinth of alleyways, a square, a river, a 14th-15th century bridge, some dilapidated buildings that will be replaced and others of historic and architectural significance that will be rehabilitated.
In the future Place Lalla Yeddouna will serve as a vibrant mixed-use urban hub for the local community as well as for visitors to the Medina. The site is expected to become a major catalyst for artisan development, with spaces for educational programs, residences, artisan production, shops, restaurants, cafés and other services, offering facilities for and attracting young and old alike.
