Zina Saro-Wiwa: 2 year pop-up gallery in the Niger Delta
Boys’ Quarters Project Space is a pop-up contemporary art gallery, running for two years from 31st May 2014 in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. The project is founded by artist and filmmaker Zina Saro-Wiwa, who will curate a programme of temporary exhibitions by both local and international artists that address the idea of environment
particularly in relation to the Niger Delta.
Saro-Wiwa says: “The gallery aims to tell new stories about Niger Delta inner-life and environments through art, events and films. As well as invigorating local cultural production, it will begin the process of re-imagining this geo-politically significant, oil-producing region blighted by a history of violence, militancy, pollution and economic upheaval. Boys’ Quarters will test the potential of culture and art to transform the
way people think and behave and test art’s ability to encourage a new engagement with places like the Niger Delta.
Situated in the old office building of Zina’s father, the late writer, activist and Nobel nominee Ken Saro- Wiwa, the space will be a prominent intervention in Port Harcourt’s visual arts scene, which is currently slight and overwhelmingly commercial. A peaceful and powerful oasis, transforming the city’s understanding and experience of art.
